We have successful grads with their own businesses in all 50 States in the US, and hundreds of Countries, Counties and Provinces throughout the world. Starting your business or getting licensed in your own particular State requires different STEPS depending not only on your State, but also your County, City, your own background, your FIELD (job, trade, profession, business) etc.
Since it would be impossible to keep up with regs in all States in all fields, especially since they change daily, you need to consult your own attorney on the steps in your own location if you want the whole list of requirements for your own field, City, County and State. For us to try to give you that information would be practicing law, meaning keeping up with millions of legal and case precedents, which we cannot do legally.
As general information, what you can do depends on how you use what you have, and the length of the checklist in your area! MOST locations only require a business license, which only requires your EIN, certification from a trade school (which we are), and getting your State tax ID, which is often free.
Some States (and this changes daily) also require bonding (which we offer and underwrite), association memberships (which we provide for ALL our fields), apprenticeships (which we can't help with as it is local), or specifically approved or registered (usually local) schools, such as for the CCW instructor-- we DO NOT maintain or update LOCAL or STATE regs, and NO other (national/non local) trade school does either, nor do large universities, online or otherwise.
Most other schools, including major universities, are only concerned with your education, not business or professional licensing, and don't even offer bonds, wholesale buying, floorplanned inventory, leases, referrals or association memberships, which we do. IN FACT, MANY States now require, for example, Microsoft Certification to work in Computer Security, so even your PhD from MIT won't cut it in those States, nor does MIT CARE about keeping up with those State requirements-- they are YOUR job as a grad to work though on your path to success, of which we, and they, are important steps.
We have grads practicing with ONLY our credentials in ALL States, but the steps they took to get through their State system vary greatly, even sometimes by City-- New York and California are very tough for everything, Florida is in the middle, and Georgia, Utah, Colorado and Arizona are easy for nearly all, just as examples,-- very business friendly if you will.
Also, fields vary greatly with State regs and requirements-- your PSU credentials, bonds and association memberships may be 100% in some States, whereas you might just check off two items with those in others, and still need extras like EIN, State tax license, sitting for State exams, etc. PSU is KEY regardless of the size or lack of State checklists!
For example, as a Court Investigator, you can work for Courts and attorneys with your PSU and LCIAA credentials in all 50 States, but most States require additional apprenticeship, bonding or local training for Private Investigators!
Gunsmiths, Locksmiths, Pastoral Counselors, Bodyguards, Investigators and most others do not generally require "state listed" trade schools like local apprenticeship Private Investigator or some Security Guard regs (unlike Background Investigator or Court Investigator, which do not), but some localities and States will differ-- just consider this another item on your checklist for living where you choose to live.
In most States, for example, even NRA certification as a firearms instructor is not enough to teach CCW-- those require LOCAL training, schools or apprenticeships. If this is all too overwhelming for you, CONTACT YOUR STATE OR ATTORNEY OR BOTH BEFORE ordering a course here, IF you don't have the energy to check off a whole list, or IF you live in a very restrictive State (generally East and West Coast!).
A Couple Frequent Questions...
Q. Is your school accredited by ___ (State "X")
A. States DO NOT "accredit" academic institutions. Accredit means that credits transfer, and this is a designation given by the US Department of Education through REGIONAL accrediting organizations, ONLY for degree granting colleges. We are part of a non profit that is audited by the largest TRADE certifying organization, but our credits do not and are not intended to "transfer" as they are for starting businesses and working in professions.
Q. Will State ___ "X" accept my PSU credentials?
A. YES, all States accept PSU credentials, HOWEVER, some States require more than only successful training, and others don't. In fact this even varies by both city and profession in some States. Some examples:
Gunsmiths: Licensed FEDERALLY by FFL, States have no right to regulate.
Pastoral Counselors: States have no right to regulate due to separation. We have supported this right for decades in the courts and online.
Locksmiths: Our BONDS and ASLPA's memberships are accepted in all States as are your PSU credentials for training and education, which is all you need in most States in addition to your business license, but in some States there are additional requirements such as apprenticeship or sitting for a State exam.
EMAIL your CSR for other professions for general info. We cannot give specific State info, as it changes daily and varies greatly even WITHIN States and certainly by the hundreds of professions we support.

FACTS, in addition to the powerful referral networks below:
1. The leading online school in the world costs an average of $50,000, yet only 29% of enrollees graduate and are certified! How do you define a CRIME?? (Source: Fox News)
2. PSU certifies 100% of our students. If you fail, we work with you until you pass!
3. NO other online school includes all texts, tools, after graduation support, etc. We've had the highest rating of any "correspondence" school since 1971, and the highest rating of any online trade school since 1989.
4. Your PSU Credentials are accepted at MORE PLACES than any other online school OR any accredited brick and mortar school!
